[Development, structure, and function of the GeriatrIMSS Institutional Model]

The increase in life expectancy over recent decades has led to a significant growth in the older adult population, resulting in an unprecedented demographic transition and generating substantial costs for the health care system. In response to this situation, the Mexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS) implemented the Institutional Geriatric Plan GeriatrIMSS, a comprehensive strategy designed to address individuals with greater physiological vulnerability and a high prevalence of non-communicable diseases. This plan aims to strengthen IMSS operational capacities and to reorient processes and services in order to provide an appropriate response to the specific needs of this population group, thereby improving medical care for older beneficiaries. GeriatrIMSS is based on 4 fundamental pillars: prevention (PREVENIMSS), comprehensive geriatric care, education, and research. Through this strategy, IMSS positions itself at the international forefront of older adult care, addressing the main health challenges faced by this population and providing preventive, comprehensive, and interdisciplinary care. This approach seeks to improve the quality of care and increase satisfaction among both users and their families. The purpose of this article was to present the development, structure, and functioning of the GeriatrIMSS Institutional Geriatric Care Model.
