Preserving Wisdom During Workforce Transformation: The Exit of Seasoned Nurses and What Leaders Must Do Now
1Regional Dean and Assistant Professor School of Nursing - Amarillo Campus Texas Tech University, Health Sciences Center, Amarillo, TX (Rice).
Abstract:
The nursing workforce is undergoing a significant generational transition as many seasoned nurses approach retirement or reduce their professional roles while large numbers of newly licensed nurses enter practice. Although workforce planning often focuses on recruitment and onboarding, less attention is given to the loss of clinical expertise, mentorship, and institutional knowledge that accompany the departure of experienced nurses. The article herein examines the organizational implications of this transition and outlines leadership strategies to preserve critical nursing knowledge, support workforce stability, strengthen succession planning, and enhance transition-to-practice outcomes during periods of generational change.
