Objective:
To investigate the influence of hematocrit (HCT) on platelet yield.
Methods:
Retrospective analysis was conducted on data from apheresis donors from January to February 2024, including height, weight, HCT, pre-donation platelet (pre-PLT) count, processed blood volume, collection duration. Differences in HCT, processed blood volume, and collection duration among platelet concentrate with varying counts were compared.
Results:
The qualification rates of single-unit, 1.5-unit, and double-unit PLT products were 100%, 83.94% and 94.09%, respectively, which exceeded the national standard (qualification rate should not be lower than 75%). The factors influencing the PLT yield were HCT, body weight and pre-PLT count. 50% of double-unit platelet products had counts exceeding 1 101×109/L, while the remaining 50% fell within the range of 985×109/L to 1 100×109/L. Under equivalent height, weight, and pre-PLT count conditions, when HCT was 44%, double-unit platelet concentrate counts met the standard, with reduced processing blood volume and collection time compared to over-standard products.
Conclusion:
HCT is one of the critical factors influencing platelet yield. For double-unit apheresis, adjusting HCT to no lower than 44% in donors with high HCT ensures compliance with product quality standards while maintaining donor safety, particularly for individuals with low body weight, poor blood flow, or susceptibility to donation reactions.

Structure and Function of Platelets
Platelets are continually replenished, circulating in the bloodstream for 9-12 days before being removed by phagocytes, primarily in the spleen. A microliter of circulating blood contains between 150,000 and 450,000 platelets, with...
Factors Affecting Erythropoiesis
Several factors influence the erythrocyte production rate, with tissue oxygen level being among the most critical. Intense exercise or high altitudes can cause tissue hypoxia, which triggers the kidneys to release more erythropoietin (EPO) into the bloodstream.

Formation of the Platelet Plug
As the injured blood vessel contracts, endothelial cells undergo contraction, revealing collagen fibers in the basement membrane and underlying connective tissue. Furthermore, the plasma membrane of endothelial cells becomes adhesive, preparing the site for platelet adhesion. Platelets...
