Background:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory neurological condition characterized by debilitating symptoms, including fatigue, which significantly impacts patients' quality of life. Probiotics are emerging as a potential intervention to alleviate MS-related fatigue through immunomodulatory and gut-brain axis effects.
Objective:
This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Familact, Multistrains probiotics, and a prebiotic, in reducing fatigue among MS patients compared to a placebo.
Methods:
A double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted with 54 MS patients allocated to receive either Familact or a placebo for 30 days. Fatigue levels were assessed using the Fatigue Severity Scale at baseline and after the intervention. Statistical analyses included appropriate comparative tests.
Results:
Patients receiving Familact showed significant improvements in fatigue levels compared to the placebo group, with no reported adverse reactions.
Conclusions:
Familact suggests the potential to reduce MS-related fatigue. Further large-scale, long-term studies are warranted to confirm these findings and explore underlying mechanisms.
