Background:
To analyze academic triclosan (TCS) production and its impact on the reproductive system and thyroid function between 2019 and 2024.
Methods:
A descriptive study was conducted using a bibliometric review using the reporting and measurement system for bibliometric or scientometric studies in health sciences (RAMIBS). A systematic search strategy was used in the Scopus database using terms obtained from MeSH and entree and developed using Boolean operators. Studies published between January 2019 and December 2024 were included. Data analysis was performed using SciVal and Bibliometrix to evaluate key metrics such as academic output, citations per publication, CiteScore 2023, and SNIP 2023.
Results:
A total of 37 studies were identified from 30 sources, which showed an annual growth rate of 14.8%. However, international collaborations accounted for 24.3%, with an average of 6.2 co-authors per study. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States led the publications, followed by Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital. The Science of the Total Environment journal was one of the most prominent, as it presented the largest number of publications.
Conclusions:
A constant increase in publications on TCS and its effects on thyroid function and the reproductive system was evident, with significant international collaboration. The CDC, Harvard University, and Massachusetts General Hospital were among the main institutions that contributed to scientific production. It is important to take these findings into consideration to continue robust research that helps make future decisions.
