Abstract:
Ventral hernias are classified as primary or acquired, with incisional hernias arising from prior surgical wounds and influenced by factors like obesity, diabetes, and infection. Their incidence and health care burden have increased significantly, with frequent recurrence. Prevention focuses on optimizing modifiable risk factors and using appropriate surgical techniques. The European Hernia Society provides classification systems based on location and size to guide management. Preoperative imaging, particularly computed tomography (CT), is crucial for evaluating hernia complexity. Metrics like rectus-to-defect ratio, component separation index, and loss of domain help predict surgical difficulty and guide decisions for advanced repair strategies and improved patient outcomes.
