Abstract:
The discovery of benzyl alcohol biosynthetic enzymes, by Lee et al. and Zhang et al., resolves a decades-old gap in the 'post-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase' (post-PAL) salicylic acid (SA) pathway. Pathway completion reveals metabolic flexibility and substantial evolutionary plasticity, with distinct enzyme modules and subcellular organization generating the same intermediate across plant lineages. Thus, conserved metabolic function can coexist with divergent biochemical architecture.
