Abstract:
This article reviews PET instrumentation from the physical principles of positron decay and coincidence detection through detector technologies, image reconstruction, correction methods, quantitative interpretation, and emerging scanner designs. Emphasis is placed on how scintillator choice, photodetector readout, time-of-flight performance, attenuation and scatter correction, and reconstruction algorithms affect image quality, quantitative accuracy, radiation dose, acquisition time, and clinical workflow. The article also highlights current directions in total-body PET, dedicated organ-specific PET, PET/MR, PET/gamma imaging, and artificial intelligence-assisted reconstruction and image enhancement.
