Abstract:
This paper draws on recent research that culminated in Universal Design (UD) guidelines for long-term residential care (LTRC) settings for older people in Ireland. Considering the broad spectrum of needs, impairments, and health conditions; the diversity of residents, staff, and visitors in LTRC; and a commitment to participation and co-creation, this research was underpinned by a UD approach. The project involved a range of Irish and international organisations and partners with expertise and lived experience in LTRC, UD, and the healthcare-built environment. As the research progressed, and as a range of complex and interconnected issues arose, it became apparent that a flexible overall framework was required to support the research and structure the guidelines. This paper focuses on this framework describing how it is informed by and reinforces a UD approach to LTRC planning and design.
