    Summary

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) impairs cognitive function in affective disorder patients, particularly memory and learning. Schizophrenia patients with TD showed no significant cognitive differences.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Psychiatry
    • Cognitive Psychology

    Background:

    • Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a neurological disorder associated with long-term use of antipsychotic medications.
    • Cognitive impairment is a common feature in psychiatric disorders, but its relationship with TD requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate and compare the cognitive functions of psychiatric patients with and without tardive dyskinesia.
    • To determine if TD differentially affects cognitive performance in schizophrenia versus affective disorder patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Cognitive assessments including Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Wechsler Memory Scale, and Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test were administered.
    • Participants included schizophrenic and affective disorder patients, with and without diagnosed tardive dyskinesia.

    Main Results:

    • Schizophrenia patients with and without TD did not exhibit significant differences in cognitive test performance.
    • Affective disorder patients with TD demonstrated significantly greater impairments in memory and learning compared to those without TD.

    Conclusions:

    • Tardive dyskinesia in affective disorder patients may indicate pre-existing brain vulnerability or represent a disorder with both motor and cognitive deficits.
    • Cognitive impact of TD may be specific to the underlying psychiatric diagnosis, suggesting different pathophysiological mechanisms.
