    Summary

    This study found that helper T cells are crucial in forming sarcoid granulomas. Disease activity in sarcoidosis may correlate with specific T-cell populations within these granulomas.

    Background:

    • Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease characterized by granuloma formation.
    • The cellular composition of sarcoid granulomas is not fully understood.
    • T cells play a role in immune responses and granuloma formation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and subsets of T cells within sarcoid skin lesions.
    • To correlate T-cell populations with disease activity and duration in sarcoidosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Monoclonal antibodies (LEU-1, LEU-3, LEU-2) were used to identify T cells and T-cell subsets.
    • Immunohistochemical analysis of skin lesions from four sarcoidosis patients.
    • Assessment of enzyme activity (acid phosphatase, nonspecific esterase) in granuloma cells.

    Main Results:

    • Significant numbers of pan T cells (LEU-1) and helper T cells (LEU-3) were found in granulomas of three patients.
    • Suppressor T cells (LEU-2) were rare in all patients.
    • Active disease correlated with higher T-cell infiltration compared to chronic disease.

    Conclusions:

    • Helper T cells are important in sarcoid granuloma formation by mononuclear phagocytes.
    • T-cell populations may influence sarcoidosis activity and disease duration.
