    Background:

    • Hemorrhagic shock involves initial compensatory vasoconstriction followed by decompensatory vasodilation.
    • Secondary vascular decompensation is linked to sympathetic inhibition of adrenergic neurotransmission.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the roles of alpha 1 and alpha 2 adrenoreceptors in hemorrhagic shock.
    • To differentiate receptor involvement during compensatory and decompensatory phases.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats underwent a modified Wiggers hemorrhagic shock protocol.
    • Adrenergic antagonists (beta, alpha, alpha 1, alpha 2 blockers) or adrenal medullectomy were administered.
    • Responses were compared between treated (Re) and untreated control (Rc) rats.

    • Beta receptors showed no significant role in shock responses.
    • Alpha 2 adrenoreceptor blockade exacerbated decompensation by ~35%.
