    Summary

A pilot study in Korea found a high prevalence of mental disorders using a translated Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). Further psychiatric evaluations confirmed these initial computer-generated diagnoses, highlighting the tool's utility in epidemiological research.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Epidemiology
    • Mental Health Research

    Background:

    • The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) developed the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) for accurate mental disorder prevalence studies.
    • The DIS, patterned after DSM-III criteria, aids in diagnosing disorders based on structured interviews.
    • Version II of the DIS was translated into Korean for this epidemiological pilot study.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the prevalence of mental disorders in a normal Korean population using the Korean DIS.
    • To compare computer-scored diagnoses from the DIS with clinical diagnoses made by psychiatric residents.

    Main Methods:

    • One hundred and seven normal Korean subjects were interviewed using the Korean translation of the DIS (Version II).
    • Psychiatric residents reinterviewed a subset of twelve subjects who received computer-diagnosed psychopathology.
    • A comparative analysis was conducted between clinical and computer-generated diagnoses.

    Main Results:

    • A surprisingly high number of subjects met the criteria for DSM diagnoses based on the computer-scored DIS interview.
    • The study provides comparisons between clinical diagnoses and computer diagnoses derived from the DIS.
    • The Korean translation of the DIS was utilized in a real-world epidemiological context.

    Conclusions:

    • The Korean DIS appears effective in identifying mental disorders within the studied population.
    • The findings support the utility of the DIS for epidemiological research in non-Western populations.
    • Further validation and comparison studies are warranted.
