    Summary

    This study reports on Philadelphia-chromosome-negative acute leukemia with mixed cell populations. Combined chemotherapy regimens improved remission rates, supporting a shared lymphoid-myeloid stem cell origin.

    Background:

    • Two novel cases of acute leukemia with heterogeneous leukemic cell populations were identified.
    • Six similar cases from existing literature were reviewed.
    • Diagnostic methods included morphology, cytochemistry, enzymatic, cytogenetic, and electron microscopy analyses.

    • Predisposing factors were identified in some cases, suggesting a potential increase in secondary leukemias.
    • Treatment outcomes varied, but combined lymphocytic and nonlymphocytic chemotherapy regimens were most effective for complete remissions.

    Implications:

    • The existence of these heterogeneous leukemias supports the theory of a common lymphoid-myeloid stem cell.
    • Further research into the origins and treatment of mixed-phenotype leukemias is warranted.
