    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Podiatric Medicine
    • Sports Medicine

    Background:

    • Post-traumatic arthritis of the ankle is a common cause of chronic pain and disability.
    • Surgical ankle fusion is a treatment option for end-stage ankle arthritis when conservative measures fail.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of ankle fusion for post-traumatic arthritis.
    • To assess fusion rates, patient outcomes, and functional disability after ankle fusion.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study of 36 patients (37 ankles) who underwent ankle fusion.
    • Assessment of fusion rates, subjective and objective results, residual joint mobility, and functional disability.

    Main Results:

    • Successful fusion was achieved in 31 ankles (84%).
    • At an average 7.5-year follow-up, 18 of 24 reviewed patients reported good or excellent results.
    • Only four patients were unable to return to their previous employment.

    Conclusions:

    • Ankle fusion remains a viable and effective treatment for painful post-traumatic ankle arthritis.
    • The procedure leads to minimal residual functional disability for most patients.
    • High fusion rates and positive long-term outcomes support ankle fusion for selected patients.
