Immune complexes in ankylosing spondylitis and controls.

B Duquesnoy

    British Journal of Rheumatology

    Summary

Circulating immune complexes (CIC) show slight elevations in ankylosing spondylitis and higher levels in Reiter's syndrome and reactive arthritis. Complement studies are recommended during infection and chronic inflammatory stages for these rheumatic diseases.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Immunology
    • Clinical Medicine

    Background:

    • Circulating immune complexes (CIC) are implicated in various autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.
    • Ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's syndrome, and reactive arthritis are inflammatory rheumatic diseases with potential immune system involvement.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate and compare levels of circulating immune complexes (CIC) and complement products in patients with ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's syndrome, and reactive arthritis.
    • To determine the utility of complement studies at different disease stages.

    Main Methods:

    • Measurement of circulating immune complexes (CIC) and complement products in patient cohorts.
    • Comparison of CIC and complement levels between patient groups and healthy controls.

    Main Results:

    • Slight elevations in CIC were observed in ankylosing spondylitis patients compared to healthy individuals.
    • Significantly higher levels of CIC and other complement products were detected in patients with Reiter's syndrome and reactive arthritis.

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated CIC and complement activation are associated with Reiter's syndrome and reactive arthritis.
    • Complement studies are advised during both acute infectious episodes and chronic inflammatory phases for a comprehensive understanding of these rheumatic diseases.
