Background:

Progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) is a multisystem autoimmune disease characterized by widespread vascular and fibrotic changes.
Gastrointestinal manifestations are common in PSS, affecting motility and structure.
Sigmoid volvulus, a rare cause of intestinal obstruction, involves the twisting of the sigmoid colon.

Observation:

Two patients with diagnosed progressive systemic sclerosis presented with symptoms suggestive of intestinal obstruction.
In one patient, the condition was initially misdiagnosed as fecal impaction.
Both patients underwent surgical intervention for the obstruction.

Findings:

Sigmoid volvulus was confirmed as the diagnosis in both patients with PSS.
Early surgical intervention led to positive outcomes in both cases.
The study highlights a potential link between PSS and the development of sigmoid volvulus.

Implications:

Sigmoid volvulus should be included in the differential diagnosis for intestinal obstruction in patients with progressive systemic sclerosis.
Timely recognition and surgical management can improve patient prognosis.
Further research may elucidate the specific mechanisms linking PSS and sigmoid volvulus.
