Scintigraphic perfusion patterns in patients with diffuse lung disease

    Summary

    Perfusion scintigraphy is a valuable tool for ruling out pulmonary embolism in patients with diffuse lung disease. A normal perfusion pattern was observed in 73% of patients, regardless of the underlying cause.

    Background:

    • Diffuse lung disease presents diagnostic challenges.
    • Pulmonary embolism (PE) can mimic other lung pathologies.
    • Accurate exclusion of PE is critical for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of perfusion scintigraphy in excluding PE.
    • To assess perfusion patterns in patients with diffuse lung disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 55 patients' perfusion scintigrams.
    • Patients had radiographic evidence of diffuse lung disease.
    • Analysis of perfusion patterns in relation to underlying conditions (CHF, reticulonodular disease).
