This study presents four accidental cases of angiofollicular lymph-node hyperplasia, also known as Castleman disease. These benign mediastinal tumors exhibit characteristic histological features and require consideration in differential diagnoses of mediastinal conditions.

    Area of Science:

    • Pathology
    • Oncology
    • Thoracic Surgery

    Background:

    • Angiofollicular lymph-node hyperplasia (Castleman disease) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder.
    • Mediastinal involvement is a less common but significant presentation of Castleman disease.
    • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate patient management.

    Observation:

    • Four cases of Castleman disease were incidentally discovered.
    • The preferred location for these tumors was the mediastinum.
    • Histological examination revealed lymph follicular hyperplasia, vascular proliferation with endothelial hyperplasia, and occasional hyalinosis of follicular centers.

    Findings:

    • The presented cases demonstrate the benign nature of angiofollicular lymph-node hyperplasia.
    • The etiology of Castleman disease remains largely unknown.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Histopathological hallmarks include follicular hyperplasia and vascular changes.
  • Implications:

    • Castleman disease must be included in the differential diagnosis for mediastinal masses.
    • Understanding the histological features aids in distinguishing Castleman disease from other mediastinal pathologies.
    • Further research into the etiology of Castleman disease is warranted.
