[Species makeup of coagulase-negative staphylococci of clinical origin]

The classification of Kloos--Schleifer was used for the identification of 175 clinical strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci. The species of staphylococci in 50.3% of the cultures were determined; as a result, S. epidermidis and S. saprophyticus were not found to be in the majority among them. The authors concluded that the above-mentioned scheme, as well as its short variant proposed by the International Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Staphylococci and Micrococci could not be recommended for practical use.
