    Summary

    The Dane particle, believed to be the complete hepatitis B virus (HBV), is highly infectious. Its concentration can be estimated by measuring hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg) and DNA polymerase activity in serum.

    Background:

    • The Dane particle is considered the complete form of the hepatitis B virus (HBV).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To correlate hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg), hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) titers, and anti-HBc titers with DNA polymerase activity.
    • To assess the utility of these markers for quantifying Dane particles in serum.

    • Dane particles were concentrated 20-fold from serum samples.
    • Levels of HBeAg, HBsAg, anti-HBc, and DNA polymerase activity were measured.
