    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Epidemiology
    • Public Health

    Context:

    • Analysis of 500 attempted suicide cases in Parma, Italy, spanning September 1971 to January 1976.
    • Categorization of attempts into single and repeated instances.
    • Inclusion of demographic, socioeconomic, and clinical factors in the examination.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the correlation between mental illness and repeated suicide attempts.
    • To identify demographic and clinical predictors of suicide attempt repetition.
    • To compare characteristics of individuals with single versus multiple suicide attempts.

    Summary:

    • A significantly higher prevalence of mental illness was observed in patients who repeated suicide attempts (66.6%) compared to those with a single attempt (19.5%).

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Females constituted a higher proportion of both single (74%) and repeated (88.8%) suicide attempters.
  • Factors such as sex, marital status, education, financial position, and mental state were analyzed in relation to attempt patterns.
  • Impact:

    • Highlights the critical role of mental health assessment in managing individuals with a history of suicide attempts.
