    Summary

This study shows that an audio-visual self-instructional strategy effectively teaches the three-point crutch gait, a key rehabilitation skill. Learning the cognitive aspects and some motor skill transfer occurred after a single film viewing.

    Area of Science:

    • Rehabilitation Medicine
    • Motor Learning
    • Educational Technology

    Background:

    • Perceptual-motor skill acquisition involves distinct learning stages.
    • Abilities required for learning evolve as proficiency increases.
    • Self-instructional strategies can enhance rehabilitation training.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and evaluate an audio-visual self-instructional strategy for learning the three-point crutch gait.
    • To determine if cognitive aspects of the skill can be learned from a single film viewing.
    • To assess the transfer of learning from cognitive to motor performance.

    Main Methods:

    • Development of a self-instructional strategy using an audio-visual medium.
    • Two experimental-control studies involving women naive to the task.
    • Modified posttest-only control group design and experimental-control design.
    • Evaluation of filmed motor performance using six criteria.

    Main Results:

    • The hypothesis that cognitive aspects of the three-point crutch gait could be learned from one film viewing was supported.
    • Evidence of learning transfer to motor skill performance was substantiated.
    • Performance differences between groups were observed in movement quality and learning speed.

    Conclusions:

    • Audio-visual self-instruction is an effective method for teaching the three-point crutch gait.
    • The strategy facilitates both cognitive understanding and motor skill acquisition.
    • Findings have implications for rehabilitation education and patient training.
