    Summary

    Pulmonary function abnormalities are frequent in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), affecting 17 of 22 patients. However, these lung issues did not correlate with kidney disease or specific immune markers in this study.

    Background:

    • Pulmonary function abnormalities are frequently observed in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
    • Limited research has explored the connection between these lung function changes and the immunological characteristics of SLE.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function abnormalities in SLE patients.
    • To examine the relationship between pulmonary involvement and immunological markers in SLE.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of respiratory symptoms, pulmonary function tests, and immunological data from 22 SLE patients.
    • Assessment for clinical or functional evidence of lung involvement.

    Main Results:

    • Seventeen out of 22 patients (77%) showed signs of pulmonary involvement.
    • A restrictive ventilatory defect or reduced diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide was found in 14 patients.
    • No significant correlation was observed between pulmonary involvement, renal lupus, and immunological abnormalities.

    Conclusions:

    • Pulmonary involvement is common in SLE, often presenting without significant dyspnea.
    • Current immunological markers and renal involvement do not appear to predict pulmonary complications in SLE.
