    Area of Science:

    • Adolescent Psychology
    • Substance Abuse Treatment
    • Clinical Psychology

    Background:

    • Limited data exists on the ongoing treatment of adolescent phencyclidine (PCP) abusers.
    • Adolescent substance abuse is a significant public health concern requiring effective treatment strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the characteristics and treatment outcomes of adolescent phencyclidine (PCP) abusers in a social rehabilitation program.
    • To identify differences in treatment duration and behavioral/emotional symptoms among various groups of adolescent PCP users.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 87 residents in an adolescent social rehabilitation program was studied.
    • Data was collected on demographic characteristics, drug use patterns (including PCP), and observed behaviors/symptoms.
    • Treatment length of stay was compared between non-PCP users, occasional PCP users, and chronic PCP users.

    Main Results:

    • Approximately 50% of the cohort were identified as either chronic or occasional PCP users.
    • Both PCP user groups were also regular users of other illicit substances.
    • Chronic PCP users had the longest length of stay in the treatment program.
    • No cases of PCP-induced psychosis were observed, though symptoms of depression, anxiety, and agitation were present.

    Conclusions:

    • Adolescent phencyclidine (PCP) abusers exhibit complex substance use patterns and psychological distress.
    • Chronic PCP users require longer treatment durations, highlighting the need for tailored interventions.
    • Further research is needed to understand and address the specific treatment needs of adolescent PCP abusers.
