Summary

Epilepsy can alter sense of smell, causing decreased olfactory function and sometimes olfactory auras. Many smell deficits linked to surgery actually pre-exist epilepsy seizure management.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Neuroscience
  • Olfactory research

Background:

  • Olfactory auras are reported in some epilepsy cases.
  • Olfactory function, including sensitivity, may be altered in epilepsy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Review literature on olfactory auras and function in epilepsy.
  • Evaluate effects of temporal lobe resection on olfactory function.
  • Examine seizure management procedures' impact on smell.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review.
  • Analysis of studies on epilepsy and olfactory function.
  • Evaluation of surgical and non-surgical seizure treatments.

Main Results:

  • Prevalence of olfactory auras in epilepsy is uncertain (<1% to >30%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Epilepsy generally decreases olfactory function, but preictal hypersensitivity can occur.
  • Olfactory deficits are often present before temporal lobe resection.
  • Taste/flavor confusion noted in taste aura reports.
  • Unpleasant auras linked to neuronal hyperresponsiveness.
  • Neuroendocrine system influences seizure activity and olfaction.
  • Conclusions:

    • Olfactory dysfunction is a significant feature of epilepsy.
    • Preoperative olfactory deficits complicate assessment of surgical impact.
    • Further research needed on neuroendocrine links and aura mechanisms.
