Summary

Organophosphate exposure does not cause monocyte esterase deficiency (MED). Enzyme activity in MED subjects did not differ from controls, ruling out organophosphorus compounds as a cause of MED.

Background:

  • Monocyte esterase deficiency (MED) is a condition affecting specific enzyme activity in monocytes.
  • Organophosphates are known to inhibit various esterase enzymes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether exposure to organophosphates could be a causative factor in monocyte esterase deficiency (MED).

Main Methods:

  • Serum pseudocholinesterase, paraoxonase, and arylesterase activities were measured.
  • Red blood cell acetylcholinesterase activity was assessed.
  • Enzyme activities in MED subjects were compared to a control group.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in serum or red blood cell esterase activities were observed between MED and control groups.
  • All measured esterase activities showed comparable levels in both subject groups.

Conclusions:

  • Current or recent exposure to organophosphorus compounds is not the cause of monocyte esterase deficiency (MED).
  • The study rules out organophosphate exposure as an etiology for MED.
