Context:

Depression is a significant health concern in the elderly population.
Cholesterol plays a role in brain health and function.
Previous research has yielded mixed results on the cholesterol-depression link.

Purpose:

To investigate the association between plasma cholesterol levels and depression in individuals over 65.
To determine if lower cholesterol, specifically LDL-cholesterol, is more prevalent in elderly individuals with depression.

Summary:

The study included 140 participants (60 with depression, 80 controls), all over 65.
Plasma cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides were measured.
A statistically significant difference in cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol was observed (p < 0.001).
