    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Pathology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Masshoff's disease, or pseudotuberculous mesadenitis, is a rare condition affecting the mesentery.
    • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate patient management.

    Observation:

    • A 20-year-old male presented with symptoms leading to surgical investigation.
    • The appendix was surgically removed and examined, along with ileocaecal lymph nodes.

    Findings:

    • Histological examination revealed hyperplasia of lymphoid tissue with small abscesses and neutrophil karyorrhexis in the lymph nodes.
    • Fibrinoid necrosis foci were observed in the lymph node capsules.
    • A strongly positive serological test for pseudotuberculosis supported the diagnosis.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of considering Masshoff's disease in the differential diagnosis of abdominal conditions.
    • Histopathological and serological findings are key diagnostic indicators.
    • Further research may elucidate the specific pathogenesis and optimal treatment strategies for pseudotuberculous mesadenitis.
