Radiology of oesophageal dysphagia

Barium radiology is the investigation of choice in patients who present with dysphagia. The barium column distends the oesophagus and shows the extent and severity of any narrowing that is present. A barium swallow should be performed without delay when a constricting disorder of the oesophagus is suspected.
