Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in children can affect the thyroid gland, leading to thyroiditis. Regular thyroid screening is recommended for juvenile SLE patients and children with Hashimoto

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Rheumatology
  • Endocrinology
  • Autoimmune Diseases

Background:

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a rare childhood autoimmune disease.
  • Thyroid involvement is not a diagnostic criterion for SLE.
  • Juvenile SLE can manifest with various organ involvements.

Observation:

  • Two pediatric cases of SLE with concurrent thyroiditis are presented.
  • Patients exhibited goiter, thyroid autoantibodies, elevated TSH, and reduced thyroid function.
  • Thyroiditis onset varied, preceding or following SLE diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Thyroid dysfunction, including hyper- and hypothyroidism, is more prevalent in children with SLE than adults.
  • Thyroiditis can be an early or late manifestation of SLE in pediatric patients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The study highlights a significant association between juvenile SLE and thyroid disease.
  • Implications:

    • Routine thyroid function tests are recommended for children diagnosed with SLE.
    • Pediatric patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis should be screened for SLE symptoms and serology.
    • Early detection of thyroid involvement in juvenile SLE can improve patient management.
