Physical capacity assessment of the acute cardiovascular patient
1Department of Rehabilitative Services, Medical Center, University of California at San Francisco, USA.
Abstract:
Early mobilization after an acute cardiac event has become common practice. Physical capacity assessment is important to determine safety level of function and to begin progression of daily activities. Physical capacity can be measured by a variety of tests that directly measure or estimate VO2max, including treadmill, cycle ergometry, walking, and step tests. Results can be used to prescribe a patient's functional level and exercise program. The patient's knowledge of self-monitoring, pacing, signs/symptoms, and precautions is also important for safety and level of function. By participating in early activity, patients can build the ability, knowledge, and confidence to return home.
