Suppressed natural killer cell activity in ulcerative colitis

Summary

Prednisolone treatment improved ulcerative colitis symptoms but only transiently restored natural killer cell activity. Immune system involvement in ulcerative colitis pathogenesis is discussed.

Background:

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
Understanding the immunopathogenesis of UC is crucial for effective treatment.

Observation:

A patient with ulcerative colitis exhibited suppressed natural killer (NK) cell activity and an elevated CD4/CD8 ratio upon admission.
Prednisolone (PSL) treatment led to a temporary increase in NK cell activity.

Findings:

Despite clinical improvement with prednisolone, NK cell activity returned to baseline low levels.
The CD4/CD8 ratio remained elevated throughout the treatment course.

Implications:

This case highlights the complex interplay between the immune system and UC.
