Laparoscopic fundoplication in a pediatric patient with severe skeletal deformities was successful. This minimally invasive approach offered excellent visualization and a good cosmetic outcome, despite increased operating time and costs.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric surgery
  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Gastrointestinal surgery

Background:

  • Severe skeletal deformities can complicate surgical procedures in children.
  • Laparoscopic fundoplication is a standard surgical treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Observation:

  • A 25 kg child with severe skeletal deformities underwent laparoscopic fundoplication using five trocars.
  • Excellent intraoperative visualization was achieved.
  • A complete posterior wrap was successfully created without transecting short gastric vessels.

Findings:

  • The laparoscopic approach provided excellent visualization and a good cosmetic result.
  • No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed.
  • The operative time and overall expenses were higher compared to traditional open surgery.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Laparoscopic fundoplication is a feasible surgical option for pediatric patients with complex skeletal anomalies.
  • Careful technique can achieve a successful fundoplicatioin despite anatomical challenges.
  • Further research may explore cost-effectiveness and long-term outcomes of this approach in similar patient populations.
