    Summary

    Atenolol significantly reduced arterial pressure in patients with benign essential hypertension. This beta adrenoceptor antagonist demonstrated effectiveness in lowering blood pressure in a double-blind crossover study.

    Background:

    • Benign essential hypertension is a common condition requiring effective treatment.
    • Beta-blockers are a class of drugs used to manage hypertension.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of atenolol on arterial pressure in patients with benign essential hypertension.
    • To determine the efficacy and safety of atenolol in lowering blood pressure.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind crossover study design was employed.
    • Patients received escalating doses of atenolol, followed by a comparison with placebo.
    • Arterial pressure was measured in supine, erect, and post-exercise positions.
