Melanoma-associated retinopathy (MAR) is a distinct paraneoplastic syndrome. This study further defines MAR, characterized by specific visual disturbances and electroretinographic abnormalities, predominantly affecting men.

Background:

  • Melanoma-associated retinopathy (MAR) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome.
  • Previous reports documented only five affected patients, necessitating further definition.

Observation:

  • Three male patients with MAR were studied using electrophysiological and psychophysical methods.
  • Visual symptoms included photopsias, color flashes, and nyctalopia with acute, nonprogressive onset.

Findings:

  • Electroretinography revealed reduced b-wave amplitudes and abnormal pattern electroretinograms.
  • Color vision, contrast sensitivity, and perimetric sensitivities were impaired.
  • One patient showed normal dark adaptation rate with elevated cone and rod thresholds.
