Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Procedures

Background:

  • Pharyngoesophageal diverticulum (Zenker's diverticulum) is a rare condition causing dysphagia.
  • Surgical intervention is the standard treatment for symptomatic patients.
  • This study details a specific surgical approach and its outcomes.

Observation:

  • The study reviews clinic-pathological features of Zenker's diverticulum.
  • A surgical procedure involving diverticulectomy and cricopharyngeal myotomy is described.
  • Techniques to facilitate dissection, including gauze packing and oesophagoscope retention, are noted.

Findings:

  • The described surgical method, diverticulectomy with cricopharyngeal myotomy, is feasible.
  • This combined surgical approach is effective in treating pharyngoesophageal diverticulum.
  • The procedure demonstrated positive clinical outcomes for patients.

Implications:

  • This surgical technique offers an effective solution for Zenker's diverticulum.
  • The findings support the use of diverticulectomy and cricopharyngeal myotomy for dysphagia management.
  • Enhanced surgical techniques improve patient outcomes for this rare esophageal condition.
