[Reasons for the decrease in viral hepatitis morbidity in Orekhovo-Zueve]

    Summary

Viral hepatitis incidence sharply decreased in Orekhovo-Zuevo due to targeted measures against parenteral transmission. This study refutes the impact of intestinal infection control and gamma-globulin vaccinations on viral hepatitis reduction.

    Area of Science:

    • Epidemiology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Public Health

    Context:

    • Viral hepatitis presented a significant public health challenge in Orekhovo-Zuevo, with incidence rates comparable to the USSR average prior to 1970.
    • A notable decline in viral hepatitis cases was observed between 1970 and 1975, prompting an investigation into contributing factors.

    Purpose:

    • To analyze the factors responsible for the dramatic reduction in viral hepatitis incidence in Orekhovo-Zuevo.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of specific public health interventions implemented during the study period.

    Summary:

    • The study investigated the decline of viral hepatitis from 154.0 to 36.5 cases per 100,000 residents between 1970 and 1975.
    • A strong correlation (100%) was found between positive benzidine tests for blood contamination on medical instruments and viral hepatitis morbidity.
    • Interventions focused on eliminating parenteral transmission routes, implemented intensively from 1970, are identified as the primary driver for the reduced incidence.

    Impact:

    • Highlights the critical role of controlling parenteral transmission in managing viral hepatitis outbreaks.
    • Underscores the importance of rigorous sterilization and disinfection protocols for medical instruments in preventing disease spread.
    • Provides evidence for the effectiveness of targeted public health strategies in controlling infectious diseases.
