    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular Surgery
    • Surgical Education
    • Medical Simulation

    Context:

    • Coronary vessel surgery demands advanced technical proficiency.
    • Traditional training involves extensive use of experimental animals, requiring significant resources.
    • There is a need for efficient and effective surgical training methods.

    Purpose:

    • To introduce and evaluate a novel phantom for practicing coronary vessel surgical techniques.
    • To demonstrate the potential of this phantom in reducing material and personnel costs.
    • To assess the feasibility of performing a high volume of practice operations.

    Summary:

    • A surgical phantom, specifically an arrested and perfused porcine heart, was developed for practicing coronary vessel operations.
    • This method allows for repeated surgical interventions without the need for live animals.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The phantom facilitates substantial practice, thereby enhancing surgical skill acquisition.
  • Impact:

    • Reduces the need for animal experimentation in surgical training.
    • Conserves valuable resources like personnel and materials.
    • Enables a higher frequency of surgical practice, potentially leading to improved surgeon competency and patient outcomes.
