Rhinogenous retrobulbar optic neuritis, an inflammation of the optic nerve due to sinusitis, can be effectively treated with optic nerve decompression surgery. This case report highlights successful surgical intervention for rapid visual recovery.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neurology
  • Otorhinolaryngology

Background:

  • Rhinogenous retrobulbar optic neuritis involves optic nerve inflammation linked to paranasal sinusitis.
  • This condition can lead to significant visual disturbances.

Observation:

  • A 40-year-old male presented with progressive visual impairment in the right eye.
  • Imaging revealed a tumor-like lesion near the right optic canal, suggestive of rhinogenous retrobulbar optic neuritis.

Findings:

  • Surgical decompression of the right optic nerve via a pterional approach was performed.
  • Postoperatively, the patient experienced rapid improvement in visual disturbance, with complete resolution within one month.

Implications:

  • Surgical optic nerve decompression is a viable and effective treatment for rhinogenous retrobulbar optic neuritis.
