Summary

Paracervical local anesthesia reduced pain during transvaginal oocyte retrieval compared to placebo. This pain relief was observed for both vaginal puncture and overall procedure assessment, enhancing patient comfort in IVF-ET programs.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive medicine
  • Pain management
  • Ultrasound-guided procedures

Background:

  • Transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval is a key component of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET).
  • Pain perception during this procedure can impact patient experience and satisfaction.
  • Effective pain management strategies are crucial for improving outcomes in assisted reproductive technologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the pain relief provided by paracervical local anesthesia during transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval.
  • To compare the efficacy of paracervical block with placebo and no injection in managing procedural pain.
  • To assess patient and physician pain assessments and their correlation with procedural variables.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, and no treatment-controlled study design.

Related Experiment Videos

  • 101 women undergoing IVF-ET procedures were enrolled.
  • Pain scores (vaginal and global) were assessed by both patients and physicians; procedural duration, oocyte yield, and medication use were also recorded.
  • Main Results:

    • Paracervical local anesthesia significantly reduced both vaginal and global pain scores compared to placebo.
    • Physician and patient pain assessments showed close agreement.
    • Procedure duration was correlated with pain scores; a placebo effect was not observed when compared to no injection.

    Conclusions:

    • Paracervical local anesthesia offers significant pain relief during transvaginal oocyte retrieval compared to placebo.
    • While effective for vaginal puncture pain, its global benefit over no injection requires further investigation.
    • The findings support the use of paracervical blocks to improve patient comfort during oocyte retrieval.
