    Summary

    Patients with alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency show elevated levels of alpha2-macroglobulin. This finding supports the idea that the increase in alpha2-macroglobulin is a specific compensatory response to low alpha1-antitrypsin levels.

    Background:

    • Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency is a genetic condition associated with lung disease.
    • Previous studies suggested a link between alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency and altered levels of other serum proteins.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the concentrations of eight serum proteins in patients with alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency.
    • To confirm the association between alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency and alpha2-macroglobulin levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Radial immunodiffusion technique was used to measure serum protein concentrations.
    • Sera from 60 patients with alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency were analyzed.
    • Sera from 60 age- and sex-matched control subjects were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Only alpha2-macroglobulin showed a statistically significant increase in patients with alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency compared to controls.
    • A strong positive correlation was observed between low alpha1-antitrypsin levels and elevated alpha2-macroglobulin concentrations.

    Conclusions:

    • The study confirms a significant association between alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency and increased alpha2-macroglobulin.
    • The elevated alpha2-macroglobulin levels in this group are likely a specific compensatory mechanism.
