Summary

Early defibrillation by emergency medical technicians (EMTs) using automated external defibrillators (AEDs) is feasible and improves cardiac arrest survival rates. However, delays in emergency medical service access and advanced care limit long-term outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of early defibrillation by emergency medical technicians (EMTs) using automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
  • To evaluate the impact of EMT-led early defibrillation on cardiac arrest survival rates in Brussels.

Main Methods:

  • 300 EMTs underwent a 20-hour AED training course with regular refresher sessions.
  • A study included 316 cardiac arrest cases, analyzing rhythm on EMT arrival and timing of defibrillation.
  • Survival rates were compared before and after the AED program implementation.
