Abstract:
Correct cellular environment is required for the differentiation of many cell types. In mammary epithelium the extracellular matrix as well as lactogenic hormones cooperate to direct accurate tissue-specific gene expression. Current evidence indicates that the promoters of milk protein genes contain elements that are regulated by both extracellular matrix and hormones. Some mechanisms by which the extracellular matrix might control transcription are considered.
