  • Oral Surgery

Background:

  • The free gingival graft is a common surgical procedure.
  • It is used to augment the zone of attached gingiva.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of the free gingival graft.
  • To establish indications and contraindications for its use.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical judgment is essential for assessing attached gingiva adequacy.
  • Evaluation includes gingival width, patient age, recession, hygiene, and dentition.

Main Results:

  • The free gingival graft is a simple and predictable technique.
  • Decision-making relies on clinical judgment and patient-specific variables.

Conclusions:

  • Free gingival grafts are not ideal for root coverage in cases of inadequate attached gingiva.
  • Alternative techniques provide more predictable and esthetic outcomes for root coverage.
