Summary

Asthma patients have varying breathlessness perception. Elderly patients may underestimate airway narrowing, necessitating peak flow meters and action plans to prevent severe attacks.

Area of Science:

  • Respiratory Medicine
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Dyspnoea perception in asthma bronchiale varies significantly, influenced by age.
  • Elderly patients often exhibit blunted awareness of severe airway obstruction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the implications of variable dyspnoea perception in asthma.
  • To identify risk factors for severe asthma attacks and related mortality.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of dyspnoea perception variability in asthma patients.
  • Correlation of perception with age and objective measures of airway obstruction.
  • Evaluation of peak flow meter use for home monitoring.

Main Results:

  • Blunted dyspnoea perception is an independent risk factor for severe asthma attacks and mortality.
  • Some asthma patients experience excessive dyspnoea without objective obstruction.

Conclusions:

  • Patients with blunted perception require objective monitoring (peak flow meters) and action plans.
  • Peak flow meters can also benefit patients with excessive dyspnoea by reducing distress and drug overuse.
