    Background:

    • Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside used to treat heart failure and arrhythmias.
    • Furosemide is a loop diuretic commonly prescribed for fluid management in cardiovascular conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of furosemide on the urinary excretion of digoxin in healthy individuals.
    • To determine if digoxin dosage adjustments are necessary when co-administered with furosemide.

    Main Methods:

    • Eight healthy male subjects received a 0.75-mg oral dose of digoxin.
    • Urinary digoxin excretion was measured over 5 days during a control period and a period with daily oral furosemide (40 mg).
    • Statistical analysis included paired Student's t-test and analysis of variance on log-transformed data.

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in urinary digoxin excretion was observed with the addition of furosemide.
    • Analysis of variance showed consistent treatment effects over time.
    • Furosemide did not significantly impact digoxin's elimination pathway in subjects with normal renal function.

    Conclusions:

    • In patients with normal renal function, concomitant administration of furosemide does not necessitate changes to digoxin loading or maintenance doses.
    • Analysis of variance with log transformation is a suitable statistical method for analyzing digoxin urinary excretion data.
