Area of Science:

  • Toxicology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Environmental Health

Background:

  • Paraquat is a widely used but highly toxic herbicide.
  • Ingestion of concentrated paraquat can be lethal, even in small amounts.
  • Self-poisoning incidents with paraquat are infrequently reported in Spain.

Observation:

  • A 69-year-old male intentionally ingested 60 ml of paraquat and 20 ml of NaOH.
  • The patient presented to the emergency service two hours post-ingestion.
  • Symptoms progressed to multiple organ failure despite aggressive treatment.

Findings:

  • Despite comprehensive treatment including gastrointestinal lavage, activated charcoal, and hemoperfusion, the patient's condition deteriorated.
  • The patient died fifteen hours after admission due to multiple organ failure.
  • This case underscores the severe and rapid toxicity of paraquat.

Implications:

  • Effective management strategies for paraquat poisoning remain challenging.
  • Public health awareness regarding the dangers of paraquat is crucial.
  • Further research into novel treatments for paraquat toxicity may be warranted.
