Surgery for cranial base tumors, predominantly benign, achieved high resection rates and improved patient function. Outcomes were favorable, with low mortality and morbidity at a specialized center.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Cranial base tumors present complex surgical challenges.
  • Effective management requires specialized expertise and facilities.

Observation:

  • A review of 172 patients undergoing surgery for cranial base tumors.
  • Tumors were predominantly benign (95%), with significant size distribution (24% >4.5 cm, 34% 3-4.5 cm).
  • Specific tumor locations included petroclival (32) and cavernous sinus (17).

Findings:

  • Radical resection achieved in 60% of patients; subtotal resection (>90%) in 35%.
  • Mean Karnofsky functional score improved significantly from 72 preoperatively to 83.5 postoperatively.
  • Perioperative mortality was 2.9%, with an additional 3 late deaths from disease. Major prolonged deterioration occurred in 1.7% of patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This study demonstrates high-quality outcomes for cranial base tumor surgery at a specialized center.
  • The findings support the efficacy of dedicated cranial base surgery programs.
  • Specialized centers can achieve favorable results in complex tumor resections.
