Background:

  • Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder.
  • Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness.
  • The pathogenesis of diabetic microangiopathy is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential involvement of serotonin in the development of diabetic retinopathy.
  • To compare serotonin levels in the blood and platelets of diabetic patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Serotonin levels in whole blood and platelets were measured.
  • High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used for quantification.
  • The study included 12 patients with Type I and Type II diabetes mellitus.

Main Results:

  • Blood serotonin concentration was significantly higher in diabetic patients (210 +/- 50 ng/ml) compared to controls (150 +/- 35 ng/ml).
  • Platelet serotonin levels did not differ between diabetic patients and controls.
  • A correlation was found between elevated blood serotonin levels and the presence of retinopathy.

Conclusions:

  • Serotonin may play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic microangiopathy.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the exact mechanisms of serotonin's involvement.
